On Youtube I stumbled across a very informative video by popular beauty blogger Hey Fran Hey, in which she details her experiences with a beauty method called oil pulling. I was curious about what it was so I did some research and on a few days ago I started the method myself. Apparently oil pulling is an Ancient Indian practice that can help improve oral health, acne, and a slew of other ailments. What is oil pulling? It is basically when you take oil, sesame or coconut is what is recommended, and you swish a tablespoon amount around your mouth for 15-20 minutes daily. It is recommended that oil pulling is done in the morning, being that this is the time when the highest amount of bacteria is present in our mouths. What oil pulling does is the swishing of the oil in your mouth actually attracts and grabs bacteria from your mouth. Once you spit out the oil you’ve been swishing around your mouth, you have rid your body of tons of oral bacteria that was just chillin’ inside your pie hole.
I made a resolution to try different things at the start of each month. I have poor oral health and I’m embarrassed to say I haven’t been to the dentist in years. I started oil pulling the evening of March 31st, 2014. I have very sensitive gums and the whitening toothpaste I use causes my gums to bleed. I have noticed that in the few days that I have been oil pulling, my gums do not bleed when I brush my teeth. I’ve also noticed that I’ve been sleeping much deeper these past few days and I’ve been having the craziest dreams. Normally I don’t remember my dreams and I sleep deeply but wake up a few times a night. In the past few nights I’ve slept straight through the night and I’ve been sleeping a lot deeper. Other pluses of oil pulling include curing insomnia and clear skin. I haven’t noticed clear or glowing skin [although I don’t get pimples very often] but maybe it’s too early to tell. I have noticed whiter teeth though, which I am certainly excited about.
If you’re interested in deeper sleep, clearer skin, whiter teeth, and better oral health, oil pulling is definitely something you should try. It is said to relieve you of sinuses, headaches, and arthritis. I don’t see any down sides to oil pulling; it is definitely a Ancient practice that your future self will severely thank you for!
